Editor's Letter

On the state of the field.

The current state of the field warrants examination. Hype has supplanted breakthrough as the operative measure of progress. The institutions leading the work have not established the trust they presuppose. Decisions of considerable consequence are taken in settings that represent a narrow subset of those they affect. These conditions are not inevitable. They are tractable.

We are constituting a society of researchers selected for intellectual seriousness rather than credential alone. Research conducted at a tempo sufficient to permit accuracy. Counsel from those whose work has earned the standing to provide it. A reach that is global in substance and not in presentation. Small in the room. Wide in the reach.

For the doctoral candidate whose curiosity has been attenuated by the apparatus surrounding it. The clinician whose thesis is written in the margins of patient records. The researcher between appointments. The thinker who declined to specialise. An institution that takes ideas seriously and itself less so.

The fire is lit. Come in.
